Your fingers need to be behind the fret rather than on top of it. Also it is important to allow your fingers assume a natural position rather than imposing what your brain thinks is a “correct” position. In a sense, you should just relax your hand, and then see if it is in a position where you can exert adequate pressure on the strings without straining.
