It is important to realize that you don’t need to press down on the guitar strings to play cleanly. You need to experiment with exercising the correct amount of pressure on the strings.

Your fingers need to be behind the fret rather than on top of it. Also it is important to allow your fingers assume a natural position rather than imposing what your brain thinks is a “correct” position. In a sense, you should just relax your hand, and then see if it is in a position where you can exert adequate pressure on the strings without straining.
